A 1940's Suburban in a modern traditional style with just the right amount of color

I particularly like this house tour because it's not over the top or a complete interior design fantasy.  I can see real people living here. The house is located in Charlotte, North Carolina, and inhabited by a New York couple.  The interior design is by Lindsey Coral Harper.

This entry is like a breath of fresh air.

The kitchen floor is painted.  Harper says:  "
The floor was stained a deep, dark brown, and it brought the whole room down. I suggested we do a large geometric design, because the kitchen is so large — it's a 20-foot-long rectangle. The bold graphic breaks it up so it doesn't feel so big. We kept the pattern clean and simple because the ikat on the sofa is so busy."

A tip from Harper I've never heard before, but one that makes a lot of sense, if you are going for impact that's not too over the top:

"You can only have one showstopper in a room. In the foyer, it's the wallpaper; in the living room, it's the curtains; in the dining room, it's the chandelier; in the kitchen, it's that acid yellow color. It's like a dinner party — you can only have one great storyteller. If two people are vying for attention, it doesn't work."

Love this bedroom.

What do you think of this house... a good balance of color?

A small and recently renovated starter home with loads of chic

Keeping the walls monochrome adds airiness to the home, therefore making the space feel larger.

I love the mix of pattern between the rug and the curtains.

If you look carefully in the picture above, behind the mirror there is a bump in the wall that they couldn't alter during the renovation.  So to distract from it they covered it with an interesting mirror and light fixture.

Two task lights substitute for an oven hood light.  I haven't decided how I feel about this yet.  You?

I think I've shown this bedroom before.  But I absolutely love it!  The yellow coverlet with the gray walls is unexpected but still elegant.

Since the bathroom is small, the owners weren't afraid to go bold and cheery with a lemon yellow wall paint.

Interiors that embody today's "traditional"

I think the below interiors really capture what I might consider today's "traditional" home. These are all real homes, so they aren't the staged, sometimes unlivable, concepts we see in magazines.

What do you think? How would you describe today's "traditional" home?

That little guy is the cutest!

Some delicious eyecandy from 3 beautiful blogs

It was design blogs that inspired me in the first place to start blogging, but between running my web design business, and running Decorology, I never have time to peruse my favorite blogs the way I once did. Therefore I decided to make myself make time by publishing occasional posts featuring images from other awesome design blogs. Enjoy!

If you haven't checked out Lonny Mag yet, do so. It's an online magazine that has a Domino Magazine feel to it. I'm sure these pics will convince you

I'm a big fan of big nightstands.

Not usually a fan of dark interiors, but I do like this gray.

What color should I paint my bedroom?

So, sadly I have to move out of my adorable brownstone parlor floor studio. I'm moving in with my friend and her fiance, and they were kind enough to give me the big bedroom. I'm already trying to figure out how I want to decorate! I've already begun saving for a lovely white upholstered headboard, as I've just been sleeping on a plain old mattress for a bed the last two years. I also plan on getting a charming white secretary style desk. The only thing I'm undecided on is what needs to come first--what color should I paint the walls? I only have one window, and we're on the ground floor, so I don't get the best light. I'm also going to be doing my work in the bedroom from time to time-- so I need to keep that in mind. Do you guys have a favorite bedroom color? Should I go for cool or warm? I'm leaning towards a light greyish-blue...

calming grey-blue

bright happy blues...

cozy neutral

the palest pink...

green and blue

or a gorgeous white bedroom...
