A peak inside the home of Shabby Chic's Rachel Ashwell

In the Aug/Sep 2010 issue of Lonny Mag they gave us a sneak peak of Ashwell's London flat. The flat came furnished and she kept all the furniture, just converting it to her needs as opposed to buying new furniture.

I think that coffee table is an old door!

I want that rug...

From her new store in London

So...I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I did not know until I read the article that Shabby Chic filed for bankruptcy in 2009. Since then, Rachel has come back with products that address the new style of cleaner lines and less "fluff," as opposed to the chintz and flowy slipcovers she's famous for. What do you think? Do you think Rachel can adapt to the changing times with her new line? Were you sad to see Shabby Chic go or were you over it??

A charming country home with style north of Copenhagen

One place we didn't visit on my travels, but is still very much on my travel wish list, is Copenhagen. I'm sure the architecture and shops would be right up my alley. Has anyone been to Copenhagen? What did you think?

The natural light in this home is great - also the architectural details like the radiator cover and top window pane.

I'm a sucker for detail shots :)

The look of all those books in the bedroom is really nice - but I'd be afraid I'd stay up too late each night reading.

This little spot in the yard is wonderfully wabi sabi no?

What do you think of this home? Close to your style?

Happy Friday - pretty bedrooms perfect for sleeping in!

I am not an early bird, and for me guilt free Saturday mornings sleeping in never, ever gets old. These bedrooms would only encourage me to spend more time in them!

Check out my style profile on Old World Charm!

I was so flattered when Shannon from Old World Charm asked me to answer a couple of questions about myself for a feature on his new blog - which I'm very excited about- Old World Charm.

What made you decide to strike out on your own as a Web designer?

Well, it all started with me designing a Web site for a friend of a friend, and it took hard work and dependability to sustain and build up clientele. I also have word of mouth to thank, which led to a lot of clients, meaning often staying up until 3 a.m. to meet deadlines. I then realized that I had to make a choice. I had to either strike off on my own or continue working at a company and discontinue freelancing on the side. Though there were aspects of the corporate world I was going to miss, I knew that it was really important to me that I work for myself. I’m the kind of designer who needs to start with a blank canvas every now and then, and I also really like interacting with people and my clients. It is also very important to me that I travel, and I’m very fortunate to possess a skill that allows me to take my work on the road when inspiration strikes (or is needed). So I went out on my own full-time in August and haven’t looked back! You can see some of my work at ashleywhitedesign.com

When and how did you first become interested in decorating and interior design?

I think I’ve always been interested in interior design. I’ve been a chronic rearranger my ever since I was a little kid. For me, setting up my room was how I played. That interest was brought back to life in 2007 when I signed a lease for a beautiful studio in a Brownstone. I didn’t have the faintest idea how to make a studio feel like a home. So online I went, discovered amazing design blogs, amazing ideas, and I was hooked!

If you want to read more, here's the interview!

Old World Charm, isn't even a month old yet, but it's already full of some great inspiration. Here are my favorites so far!

Kathleen Kelly's "shabby sweet" studio apartment in "You've Got Mail"

I've been wanting to feature the adorable studio apartment of You've Got Mail's leading lady for quite sometime. It's an adorable and charming blend of Shabby Chic and Laura Ashley. I think it's especially endearing because it's like a little country cottage in the middle of the city, and because it fit's Kathleen so well. Her meal ticket is selling children's books, and her home looks like it's straight out of a fairy tale. What do you think? Would you change anything?

The above image is her home in the opening scene

After the store goes out of business I noticed her studio was rearranged, and was filled with objects from her shop. I like the bed placed at a diagonal as it is below.

I love her headboard and quilts

Her kitchen is really sweet - who'd think to put a little lamp in the kitchen?
